Did Herb know?
The American Crisis. by the author of Common Sense [Thomas Paine] "These are the times that try men's souls: ... "
Interesting question, and that can only be answered in some hypothetical way.
Anyway, mostly what Herb knew, from 1954 to 1956 was he really liked his pick-up truck which might have had a lot to do with the radio, because when he listened to baseball games, it was like really , really being there, which was fascinating for Herb, as really no other radio really seemed to produce that effect on him. Of course, at that time Herb spent a lot of time with Ralphy , but by 1956 it was time to get a " new " , but more important, larger vehicle, because of the increases in his business, so he " re-upped ", and got something larger, So, long days with Ralphy began to decrease.
So, the only thing that would be suspicious was that most of his family would be reading in or around the pick-up, which some might find suspicious but because it was just a shady spot in the yard, and Herb actually did it himself, imagining that he was practicing his diction perhaps, no one in the family thought much about it.
However, there where two employees that spent a lot of time around the farm. One in particular that did mechanical work, certainly may have had some suspicions of his own, which unfortunately, maybe a whole different story.
